so,... got some guppies at the last auction and I'm not sure how long it will take for them to relax and settle in. I know they were stressed because one was already dead before I was even able to release them out of the bag (understandable, it was a long day for them). Anyway, I still have 3 of them. They are in a well cycled tank with some cherry shrimp and some red plecos that I also got. (Plecos are luvin it!). The guppies were just staying near the surface, breathing heavy, and not really interested in eating. Two of them (females) have finally started to move around a bit, and as of today will 'nibble' at the food (flakes). The male (still looks a bit shaggy since released from the bag, not sure how long the fin healing process is... but I'm sure it's a lot slower if the fish is stressed), but hides (there is wood, real and artificial plants, which I think are helpful, also put in some StressCoat once I realized how they were behaving when I let them out of the bag. Note: i did do temperature acclimation in addition to gradual water input into the bag to minimize shock due to different water chemistry). For the time being, I'm keeping the tank dim to give them more time to settle in, and only turning on the light periodically to get a good look at things. Did two partial water changes in the past week to minimize the chance of a spike while the biosystem adjusts to their presence.
30 years ago, I recall guppies being pretty resilient, but with all the new varieties, I expect this to no longer be the case. Anyway, A bit concerned for their well-being and looking for some input.... kinda feeling like an untrained fish therapist at the moment...
