Hi All, I used to be active on this group back in 2006 -2007 but got busy with other stuff. I remember going to group meetings in oceanside and buying some plants back in 2007. I have to admit that i was a better aqua-scaper back then compared to now lol. I had a great looking planted tank and I put some discus in it, the fished eventually died. i have a discus tank now and its becoming a challenge to keep even my Java ferns alive (mainly because I have to medicate from time to time and keep the temperature at 86 degrees which plants dont like). Anyways if anybody would like to share some thoughts on this, that would be great.

Hi Smilet, Thanks for the reply. I have not used a chiller but seems there is a bit of misunderstanding. I actually raise my temperature for the fishes to be in their best health. Discus fishes like to be in higher temperature, this keeps them active and their metabolism is higher. Also wards off any bacteria and other parasites ,like hexamita for example that thrive in colder temperature. The problem is this seems to adversely affects my plants. May be there are plant species that can tolerate high temp like 86 degree F that will be a better option for me.

Try Anubias or vallisneria or Amazon swords
Or some Java moss!

Hey Ratin, welcome back. Unfortunately most plants don't like Temps above 78 some can tolerate up to 82. Almost none will survive long term in 86. My suggestion is keep the discus tank for discus and set up a smaller tank to aquascape/grow plants.
I kept S.A. plants like swords to accommodate my discus. I had a 120 with open top (humidity mess, had to run a big dehumidifier to help keep up), but it would allow 3-5 foot tall Swords with long 6-8 foot bloom stalks and a lot of emersed leaf growth. I used smaller swords for ground coverage. Takes a while to fill in, but they did well in the hot water. They also did well in fine sand substrate with small pebbles mixed in. I will see if I can scratch up a pic or two.
Was a 120 gallon. Tore down years ago and sent Discus to local collector, plants went into other tanks, and sold 120 gallon tank. Built a 60 gallon and 40 gallon out of plants from this display. Thanks for compliment. ����
