    Frosted backing

What do people use to get the "frosted" backing on their tanks?

I know ADA stores sell sheets that fit their specific tanks, but I want to do it on a 20g regular.

    Thanks!

The window frosting sheets from home depot works, but it is a pain in the booty.

I recommend getting the spray can stuff from lowes.

I used window sheets on 2 of my tanks, it wasn't that difficult putting them on. However, they were only 5 gal tanks.

Do you remember where you bought it?

I got it from another scape member, but I think they are available from Home Depot.

Just look for the Frost windows film.

It is available from home depot.

Anything too big and its adhesive properties get itself out from under you. I used it for a 29 gallon in a confined space and it was frustrating to work with.

Im doing the frosted aerosol for anything bigger than a 10 gallon in the future.

Make sure to use water (preferably ro) and squeegy out excess. You can use scotch tape to help hold it on.

Honestly working with adhesive films is frustrating and requires some level of skill and some basic tools(razor, ruler, credit card or squeegy, acetone/alcohol) Totally doable, cost is a bit high compared to spray paint. Do what you think is best, but I wanna reinforce that spray paint is easier to apply and remove... Mask off, spray once you have a light frost, spray twice you have a medium frost, spray three times you have a dense thick frost. To remove just scrape with a razor and poof back to brand new.

    20" x 4' sheet is $13.00 from walmart

Having used the spray, is the smell strong? What is the drying time like?

Since I already have the tank going DSM, I will make sure to complete mask the opening, but will the odor linger once I bring it back inside?

It's like any other spray paint, spray sets in 10 min, dry to the touch in about 30 min, cure 24-48 hours. After about 24 hours there should be no smell. If you are doing DSM. Move to shaded patio or any shaded outdoor area you may have, cover top of tank with syran wrap, mask off the frame, use junk mail ads and cover/mask off the sides. Spray the first coat evenly. Let dry 30 min - 1 hour and inspect, if the frost is to your liking let cure 24 hours. If you want a thicker frost spray first coat let dry, apply second coat and let dry, repeat as needed. Dry time and cure time increases with additional coats.

Saran wrap breathes. Use plastic drop cloths instead, anything of thicker mm. Tape it across the complete seams/edges.

Let it dry for the first 10 minutes so the texture sets and then put a fan to blow air across it.

I bought a frosted window film on Amazon. Did two 40g. breeders and a 5g. Was easy and quick.

I read an article on advanced Aquarist on backgrounds and the effect it has on your lighting. If you go on their website and search black background, it will be under equipment review: Reflectors. I found it very useful when I was deciding what to do with my aquarium background.
