New Contests/Fund Raiser

Hi all, as most of you know our club's main source for raising funds have been revenues raised by auction & donations. We are greatful for all members who have been supporting SCAPE by selling and buying in the auctions. However, we have come up with an additional way to raise money for our club and it will be through these photo contests. Here is the framework for the new contests SCAPE will be having:


- Photo contest (1 each month). This contest forum will be in the photography forum. There will be a $2 entry fee per picture and the 1st place prize will be 2 raffle tickets (value of $10) and pic displayed on homepage (for 1st and 2nd place). The winner has to sit out at least the next contests in the interest of fairness.

- Scaping contest (1 each months) since there may be fewer entries and it gives the contestants time to prepare their scapes. This contest forum will be in the member aquascapes forum. There will be a $2 fee per entry and the 1st place prize will be 2 raffle tickets ($10 value) and pic displayed on homepage (for 1st and 2nd place). We will have the winner sit out the next round in the interest of fairness.

- The judging will be done via thread poll so that each member can vote for the entry they think should win.

You can enter as many times as you like. We plan to have our first contests in November. Official rules will be posted when ready and before the contests begin.

Can't wait until the ADA Room is set up. I will have lots of tanks to choose from to enter. Time to learn how to use a camera correctly. Have 2 scaped tanks right now that I will enter when the time comes. My 90H and 90P iwagumi look much different than they did when I posted their pictures a few months ago. I guess I will have to wait until the contest to post more pictures.

Hey Richard - that sounds like a good plan. Should be lot's of fun and looking at member tanks is my favorite part of these forums. Like Jon, I better figure out how to use a camera!

Will this be restricted to current pictures only?

Thanks guys, I was thinking about starting something fun and exciting for all members while benefiting our club and this seemed to be the way

James, let's hope everyone has fun too.

Jon, you can and should still post pictures of your tanks since we all like to see them. You can pick out a couple of your favorites for the contest.

Bill, although the pictures will have to be yours, the "photo contest" pictures can be your past pictures of any aquarium related subject. However, the "scaping contest" pictures should be current for obvious reasons, and our members might want to drop by to see the scape in person.

I just want to add that although these contest involve the use of photograpy to produce an entry it is not a "photography" contest, it is a "photo" and "scaping" contest. This means it is the particular subject and scape that should be judged and not the quality (ie. resolution) of the picture, although it would help if the viewer/voters are able to tell what they are looking at

There will be two contests, a photo contest and a scaping contest. There will not be separating according to size for now.

Let's see how much fun we all have and how well the contests go before we make changes.

In the official rules of the contest, it says "The photograph may be used outside of SCAPE." Does this mean SCAPE may publish the photo under SCAPE name and the name of the author attach to it?
Also, do we get a reference number for each submission?

It says this because the author of the rules put it in. There are no plans to use them for anything other than the contest at this time. If we do decide to use it in the future I think that the author can be notified.

Other than the entries being numbered when displayed, no there are no reference numbers.

After discussing it with the SCAPE moderators we have decided in the interest of fairness and fun to display the entry photos without the members' name/ID during voting time. This will allow the voters to vote for the photos they like without being biased. We will of course display the names/ID after the winner has been determined so that we will know which pictures were from which members.

We also ask those who enter to refrain from campaigning for votes by revealing their entries and asking other members to vote for them.
