    Vin's Scape and such

I originally wanted to set this tank up as simple shrimp tank but have decided to make it into a riparium after seeing octanejunkie's tank, posted here http://scapeclub.org/forum/showthrea...G-CAD-Riparium.

    Tanks dimensions: 24x24x12.
I intend to fill my tank up all the way so I will not be using any riparium plants that require much humidity.
I was thinking of getting a Finnex Ray 2 and have it hanging up a few inches above the middle of the tank.
    Riparium plant recommendations?
    Aquatic plant recommendations?
I should probably mention that I still plan to house shrimps in there

Any other tips/ recommendations are highly welcome!

Hey Vin, welcome to the riparium club (unofficial)

That's a really interesting format tank, I can't wait to see your plans for it

I would take a gander at ripariumsupply.com and crazydaz's thread on TPT for some super sick rip inspiration, mine is pretty basic and I am not doing anything about humidity control, as can be seen from the tips of

Here are some of the plants I have and used:
    Aglaonema simplex (in another tank)
    Aglaonema minima (in another tank)
    Cryptocoryne ciliata
    Cephalanthus occidentalis (cat palm)
    Lysimachia (creeping Jenny)
    Pilea grandifolia (aluminum plant)
Echinodorus cordifolius 'Tropica Marble Queen' (Spade-leaf Sword)
    Ruellia 'Katie' Dwarf Bluebell
    Cyperus Dwarf (umbrella Sedge)
    Alternanthera dentata
Oplismenus Basket Grass (in another tank)
    Spathiphyllum 'Golden Glow' (from Eric)
    Asclepias curassavica (mexican milkweed)
    Zephyranthes Pink Rain Lily
I got most all of these from hydrophyte (Devin) on SCAPE, he has the same handle on most all other forums too so you can google his handle

    Some other worthy mentions are
    Gibasis geniculata (Tahitian Bridal Veil)
    Cryptocoryne lutea
    Eleocharis montevidensis
Hygrophila pinnatifida, and most ferns actually

Many of the Bucephalandra sp. will grow emerged (but need humidity) as will some of the Anubias (careful with shrimp and anubias) and certain Crypts will all emerge and grow, as well as certain Hygrophilia. So many options!

For your filter, if this is going to be a shrimp tank too, I'd consider a 2213 PLUS a sponge filter and aquasoil, but I would really consider using the riparium planters and trellis rafts from ripariumsupply.com, they are very handy.

Lighting is all about the plants, not the substrate. If you are going to grow emerged plants then the light needs to be where the growth is, above the waterline and above the leaves. You can probably start the light on the rim of the tank but you will either have to raise it as the plants grow, or install a second light higher up so the plants "reach" for the light; remember, you are emulating the sun

I have amano shrimp in my riparium but I think those things could live anywhere! I'd be interested to see what you come up with

Have fun researching your build and keep us posted

I think I'm done doing research for today...
My biggest issue right now is how I'm going to hang the lights. I am to be using 2 fixtures and I need them both to be adjustable...Maybe we talk about it at the meeting tomorrow lol

Hey sorry I have not been over on SCAPE very much. I got busy with some stuff.

That tank is a real nice size and shape. I have found that enclosures low and broad like that look especially good with tall plants. The Acorus will look good in there, but I think it would be good to also add something that will reach up about 30" high. The planting that I have in my shallow 6.5 with cat palm as the tallest plant shows this pretty well.

Cat palm (Chamaedorea cataractarum) is a good choice for this sort of the thing and so is Cyperus.

Hey Devin, won't Cyperus papyrus get really tall? My Asclepias is almost 3' and has passed the light!

There are lots of different kinds of Cyperus and two that I have tried that grow well in ripariums and don't grow so tall: 1. C. alternifolius var. gracilis (grows to about 24") 2. C. involucratus 'Baby Tut' (grows to about 30").

I think this tank would look real good with a couple of 'Baby Tut'.

Cyperus papyrus is a different plant. It is pretty common in gardening, but it grows to 10' tall and it's too big to put in a fish tank.

    Devin, your mailbox is full!

I'd like to grab a pot of Cuperus alternifolius var. gracilis, and a Cyrtosperma johnstonii if you have any, along with a hanging planter kit and 4x tank planter kit - can you send me an invoice, please?

Also have you had any success with Fittonia sp? I have F. verschaffeltti in a trellis along with Tradescantia zebrine and Hypoestes phyllostachya, so far so good!

    Vin - sorry to hijack!

Well, Ben, hopefully the discussion, not withstanding the request for an order, adds value to the thread by identifying additional species of plants suitable for a riparium; for the benefit of the OP and others interested in ripariums of course

costco $65 could hold up to 1k pounds per rack. I actually get up on it from time to time to clean the back of the tank I normally cant reach lol, so yeah really strong and I would recommend

I have an idea to make a shallow tank about the same shape as that 6.5 that I have, but maybe a little bigger to plant a regular fully aquatic aquascape with real short plants like certain crypts and erios. I would light it up with a pendant LED hung well above the water and the scape would be intended mainly for viewing from above. I think this would be pretty cool.

It's not hard to build little tanks like this. The glass for that 6.5 was only about $35 and the silicone was another $6. You should still build as strong as possible, but with the shorter height the seam strength is less critical. For easy, straight and clean seams, use masking tape.
