Increase the humidity by spraying more water mixed with excel. If you don't kill it early, you will have to throw away the whole plant.

I've never done emersed growth, so mold grows on the plant? Is it due to the submerged leaves dieing off? What does the excel and water due?

Mold grows on the plant when it is in its weakened transition stage and the humidity is too low. The water increases the humidity and the excel kills it off with minimal damage to the plants.

Justin, any pointers for my belem? The UG seems ok, but not growing. The belem leaves all clumped together and doesn't look like it's really growing. HC is doing GREAT!

I've noticed Belem takes longer than most foreground plants to transition. I've had Belem for a month, and it just started sending out runners.

After two months, Eleocharis sp. "Belem" has an explosion in growth sending at least one runner per day per patch of plant.

Staurogyne repens tends to shed its leaves by the third week by turning yellow to black and are replaced by thicker waxy leaves.

Downoi also sheds its leaves starting from the second week and has the same colorations the Staurogyne repens and leaf shape is determined by humidity levels. SPRAY IT A LOT OR IT WILL MELT BY TURNING WHITE TO BLACK! If the center crown is green, it is still possible to revive the plant.

I tried growing belem emersed and it grew bigger like with longer and bigger shoots and spreads with bigger spacing unlike when they are grown submerged. I would not grow them emersed anymore. UG will grow slowly and it's leaves will be pale green when grown emersed. You will need bacteria on your substrate to get them going. Remember, it is a carnivorous plant.

I'm thinking about doing some stauro emersed. Once it goes back to submerged, does it drop all the new waxy leaves and make the switch back to the original growth or does it keep all the emersed growth?

Sure, or you can just exhale into the bag to give it some natural CO2

OOh I'm going to try that. Might as well, atmo co2 is so low. My plants will smell like garlic, but thats ok. Excel + Exhale will make my emmersed growth thrive.

What are you guys doing for heat? Or does that not matter?

so i've been thinking of starting up a 4 gallon with emersed hc. from what i can gather from this forum... i should fill the substrate up with water to about the level of the substate, saran-wrap the top, spray it with water to keep the moisture levels up, and blow into it to increase co2 lol. also throw a damp sponge into the tank as well? any pointers on photo-period and anything else i may have missed?

    it's a finnex 4 gallon with a 26w clip on cfl bulb.

sounds like you know what to do. No need for the damp sponge. Also, you really don't need to worry about CO2 when you are growing HC emersed. It grew fine for me without it. You could have a 12 hour photoperiod since there is no need to worry about algae when growing it emersed.

when I had the water level with the substrate I ran into the problem of green stuff growing on the substrate. I keep the level a little bit lower than the substrate, that's why I have the moist sponge.

Is there a "set" WPG and number of light hours for optimal emmersed growth? How about light distance?
