    Burt's 75gal build

Well finally got a new tank and going to try something besides my usual unkempt jungle tank. Thanks to @John7429 who traded some stuff with me to make it possible.

This will likely be a very slow build.

For now I have the tank and stand. I picked up a couple snap together free flow garage tiles by racedeck which are supposed to be impact resistant and can handle 80,000 pounds of weight before cracking so thought it might be good to protect the bottom glass from the rocks.

I ordered a Serene Sun and brackets and the background light. I also got some manzanita and petrified wood from manzanita-driftwood.com.

Few more things will I'll mention as I get to work on the hardscape this week.

I may get that money in the next 15-20 years just in time for adult diapers. If this bothers you don't click on any links to products I post.

Next I am trying something which I hope will work. I purchased some knee high nylon socks on Amazon. Then I got a bag of lava at Home Depot, rinsed it in a strainer and am filling the socks. I am not stuffing them tight as the lava rock is sharp and I imagine it could abrade the socks. Use a 4 or 5" piece of PVC to hold the sock open and put the lava in - again I don't want to tear the threads. Then I knot the end and add a zip tie.

Finally I am starting to stack them. After which I'll put a little substrate, then the hardscape and then the finish later if gravel.

That's the plan anyway. Let's see how it goes.

Thanks guys. Of course I imagined it would come out like those IAPLC winners so I was quickly humbled.

My very first buce glued to rocks and in tank from buceplant.com I have 3 more coming Monday from buypetshrimp.com then hoping they all grow.

It is a little less red in real life - the lighting makes it seem a tad redder but it is all red clay stone (Fluorite Red) and the rocks are mostly petrified wood but the dust from the clay gravel has layered the rocks a bit because of my digging around which has made the color match more. As for me I am hoping red/purple and blueish tones I have seen on some buce comes in because that would be stunning.

Well the right side is seeded with buce which I cut up. The left has very few yet. I am looking for plants with more if a desert vibe some eriocaulons, trithuria and the like. I'm not going to plant anything that grows taller than 3 to 4 inches I think. Hopefully it will fill in. The buce with the tiniest leaves seem to be popping a bit already.

Are you using some backlight here? The effect reminds me of sunset.

Holy moly, this is looking good.

I love the hardscape and choice of plants. Was the lava rock in stockings used to provides a firm foundation for the hills? And what species livestock do you have in mind for this?

Actually I was trying to cut down on the amount of rock needed. I put 40 pounds of petrified wood in there and it didn't make a dent. The lava is cheap and figured it would create some growing surface for bacteria. By putting it in the socks I avoid the problem of tall piles of gravel sliding over time. Also in my experience with a lot of rocks buried under the gravel you get areas of hydrogen sulfide where stuff builds up and there is no circulation. I am hoping the nylon socks with those ping pong ball size lava rock will 'breathe.'

As for fish I'm still thinking. Definitely Ottos - not sure why but I love those guys. I was also considering pencil fish as I have a pair now and they are so interesting. I also have a pair of threadfin rainbows and thinking about a school of them. I like the sparkling gouramis, I like the freshwater blue neon gobies if they can be found. I love Rams but might eat some shrimp I guess so if I did get them I'd let the buce grow a bit to provide more cover. Plenty of choices but I want my shrimp so choices will revolve in part around them. No live bearers probably as the babies tend to pile up.

I love fish with iridescence -in short I am not 100% sure. Guess I should have just said that.

Yes I picked up the Current USA backlight. I had made some backlights myself but truthfully they were rustic looking - framed with wood from some old pallets- and I wanted a nice looking tank since I only have one.

Yeah I am a fan of anubias I have one sheltered in the back and hopefully it will take off. I saw the white but heard that in strong light it might get green and the tank is pretty bright.

The buce from buypetshrimp.com was nice as was buceplant.com. I got 3 2x2 from each and was able to divide each into 4 to 6 smaller plants.

My Anubisís white never lost any white but my local LFS had a anubias marble white that faded out over a years time
    Slowly but surely

Buypetshrimp has always had some solid buces. If you wait around, he has random sales as well, they are worth taking advantage of.
