    Please help with CO2 system

I am interested in setting my tank with CO2 system, but i've never done it before. I really need to understand how CO2 system work. I know we use it to inject CO2 into the tank for plants to photosynthesis. However, could you please explain what components needed in the system and how each component work? If i want to buy one, what should i expect and where to find a good deal. My tank is about 90 gal. Here is the website that i found about CO2 system, but i really dont know what i need to have a complete setup. http://www.aquariumplants.com/produc...FSgtawodhjs1Zw. Thanks a lot.

here is a guide that will help some. http://www.rexgrigg.com/regset.html

for one thing you really dont need to spend $370 on a co2 system. pick up the co2 local at a welding store ore brewery store. then your next option would be a cheap that works regulator or a higher end solid build regulator. there are some regulators for $80 up to $150 or more.

co2 tank screws in on the upper left of this pic. just left of that is the dual indicator which tells you the pressure of the line and tank. after that a Solenoid is screwed into the regulator (that black box) which allows you to have a ph meter or run the co2 on a timer. after that at the end is the needle valve which controls the bubble rate. there are cheap ones that cost $15 and goes up rex as one with super fine control for $70. again its just how much you want to spend. from there you plug in some co2 tubing into a way to diffuse the co2. also some come with a bubble counter.

Thanks a lot for your help. Now, i understand how CO2 system works. I have searched around and i found:

Option 1: (buy each component separate)
    1) Regulator, solenoid valve, bubble counter, needle valve ($90). http://www.aquacave.com/milwaukee-co...brma957-4.html
    2) CO2 tubing ($8 for 10 feet). http://www.aquacave.com/co2-tubing-1...-foot-235.html
    3) CO2 check valve ($27)
    http://www.aquacave.com/dennerle-hig...alve-1581.html
    4) Bubble counter liquid ($8)
    http://www.aquacave.com/bubble-count...50ml-1162.html
    5) CO2 tank (5 pounds) ($75 for empty tank + $13 to refill CO2)
    http://www.aquacave.com/5-lb-aluminu...nder-1151.html
    6) CO2 diffuser ($20)
    http://www.drsfostersmith.com/produc...=0014036000000
    Total: $241 without PH monitor

Option 2: the whole system for $285 including PH monitor device which is about $110

Please advice or let me know if you know any better deal than this.

If you can wait around, you sometimes find good deals on used setups on craigs list and other places (like the tradewinds section here). I got a whole setup (no PH monitor) for $160 by just catching a good deal when it came along.

For diffuser, go w/ DIY inline. Probably gonna cost you the same 20 or less depend, but it'll be far more superior and zero profile in the tank. It will hamper your filter somewhat though; minuscule if paired w/ a powerful filter already.

You dont need a bubble counter if you dont mind pulling the tube in and out.
Check valve can be obtained for less than 5 buck that made from just as quality brass.
I think co2 tubing is the same as silicone tube.
That clippard needle looks swell, but if you want even more saving you can get a needle valve just as capable from Plumbing City in Canoga Park for like 5 buck - or was it Lowes :@ Brass of course. You can also get all your needs for DIY inline from same shop.

    55 buck 5lb Co2 tank Aluminum: http://www.beveragefactory.com/draft...s/co2/C5.shtml
You can also get a regulator from there for like another 30-40. Basically about 100 for tank and regulator.
It has no solenoid but that item depends entirely on personal taste. Ask around on opinion for solenoid.

You can get it filled for 12 buck from local place near Northridge called Tavern Service.

What I'd recommend you to get is a CO2 indicator.

if you got the 20 pound co2 tank, would that easy carry handle get in the way of our regulators?

it can, depending on the regulator. You might also need a special spanner wrench that can fit in the gap and tighten the nut in the small space.
