    Substrate

Has anyone ever done a dry start with a cheap substrate? Such as eco complete and is it possible to up keep a carpet such as Monte Carlo in it without co2? I heard you can carpet Monte Carlo without co2 but requires good lighting and nitrite rich substrate

Edit: I completely skipped over the first question... mine was not a dry-start.

I have MC in my 40g without co2. The tank has Fluval Stratum substrate and a Fluval planted LED. The MC took awhile to grow only because the substrate is too loose and it would float up to the top every time any fish, shrimp or snail nudged it. Now it's deeply set with the roots going all the way down to the bottom of the tank (substrate is about 2in deep).
