Hello from the "Hood", aka Oxnard

    Introduction.

Well, I have been into anything fish or water since before I could remember, and parents say I was far obsessed before I could talk. Can’t explain it and it is what is. Thus I have had tanks most of my life, mostly dependent on financial standing and living situations. Did work at a fish store for a couple year through community college, where I spent most of my paychecks, guess you could call that recycling. Thus had anything from a gold fish to a productive reef and everything in between – discus, community, salt, Africans, South American, ect. And although I had live plants over the years, more recently I started my first “true” plant tank. It has been frustrating, mostly due to my lack of research and impatience, but it has become extremely productive and rewarding.

I only have the one tank at the moment, I just recently moved back into my house after living in it for a few year as a fixer upper, just recently back in after a major remodel. I am still building some cabinets for a couple in wall tanks, one will be ~300g, while the other ~150g corner if I get my way with the boss. Thus my current tank was just to satisfy that I wanted a tank as soon as I moved in. Was looking for something simple so bought a Bio Cube 32, and of course I made it as complicated as possible! I know the lighting is not ideal, but plants don’t lie and I have to prune every few weeks, have Neon’s spawning (although think all eggs are getting eaten), plants thriving, as well as fish and shrimp breeding like mad. I am now wanting to get a bigger plant tank after this sucess, there are so many additional plants and fish I like to get if I had a lot more space.

I am currently using the Seachem line as well as a CO2 controller.
Plants – Vals, Swords, Cryptocoryne Wendtii, Rotala Wallichii, Microsorum Windelov, Staurogyne Repens, java moss, Micro Sword Lilaeopsis, Ludwigia Repens Red
Fish – Neons, corries, plecos, shrimp, beta, Siamese algae eaters, rams.

One think I don’t like doing is having to cut, pull and throw so many plants away. Thus if someone is in the Ventura area and starting out I could give some to a lot of plants. Not just trimmings, can pull some shoots with roots and all. Actually have too many at this point and I like a more open look. Not looking for money, nor someone trying to make money off me, thus only to a hobbyist that going to use them. Maybe you will have something to share in the future.

Eventually going to have shrimp available, at some point I am going to have too many, babies everywhere and now starting to see them come out into the general population. Again would donate to a fellow hobbyist.

Not so great Pic from about a month ago, moved things around quite a bit, try and get some pics this evening after a trim.

Hey Welcome Kipp, where are the pics? Glad to hear you're jumping back into the hobby. Good luck with convincing the other half. Things usually work out around here with a little compromise.

I am looking forward to future builds too. I was about to order the 125g corner tank (pentagon) that was going to be my bigger plant tank and my BOSS got very pissed cause she wants the built in /in wall 300 gallon done first! Not sure whether to be pissed or embrace it. Got to love her! She wants the tank done more than me! But going to take some time, I travel a lot, and some know building cabinets and custom tanks take time, lot of hours.
So originally planned this bigger tank as a reef, but I don’t have the funds or time. Then thought open salt (so easy), but after having this small plant tank, very tempted. Little worried about massive water changes. Water sucks so back in Oxnard, needs RO and a treatment vessel. In my current 30g, 20 gallon rubber maid trashcan works fine for 90% once a week. But 300g is different ball game. Guess with a bigger tank you have so much more water compared to bio load, but still need to think about that even it were twice a week and lower percent, still a lot of water.
Any advice on big water changes out there, all ears?
