    Sudden Nerite Die Off

Hey guys and gals - need you help with a mystery. Came home last night to at least 10 of my 20 + nerites in the big tank lying dead on the open sand. I can only assume there are others in the plants.

Ammonia and nitrites all at zero, nitrate totally acceptable, CO2 is normal, fish seem unaffected, pH was 6.8 which is normal for the end of the day... I am stumped!

The only change I can think of is that I decided to try dry dosing my ferts instead of making a solution... maybe I overdosed by accident? Too much copper in the Micro’s or something?

    Any ideas?

The dry ferts must be the culprit.
    Did you weigh them accurately?

I thought so- I am pretty careful in all things, by nature- but it is the only thing I can think of. Like I said, fish seem fine, so I guess I will just keep up with normal water changes and give it a few weeks before adding any back in.

Do you use a micro mix? I have CSM+B, and in dry form it isn't too homogeneous a powder, and I think it is made by mixing particles of different pure micros. So, with a tiny amount of dry powder, it would be possible to get way more, or less, of one micro nutrient just because of luck and particle size (for example, if the micro mix has 1 particle per thousand of copper sulfate, and you're dosing a dry amount that is about 500 particles in size, you can see how you'd get some that had no copper, and a few that had too much.

With micro mixes, I think you'll get a solution closer to the desired concentration ratios if you make up solution in a bottle (where you can add a few teaspoons of micro mix instead of a tiny pinch) to help even out the inhomogeneity.

Very interesting- yes, that is exactly what I use.

How long have you had the snails? What is the GH of your tank? Did you notice any pitting on the shells or were they completely smooth?

Hey Carlo- I know what you mean, I had that in my 75 when I was running the CO2 at high levels and had a pH closer to 6, but no- these have only been in the tank about a month and still look totally fine on the outside.

I havenít measured the GH in this tank, but I havenít see any shell degradation.

It's likely that what Ben said is the culprit. Sometimes they just kick the bucket for no reason.

So weird that it happened all at once, though. At least I saw most if not all of them, and in a tank the size of mine, it didn't cause a big ammonia spike.

How did you confirm that they were actually dead?

Theres a minor chance they just clamped up and went into hiding because they got irritated by the dry ferts.

No, most of them had their trapdoor loose and hanging. I put them all in a small container of fresh water just in case, and none of them had moved by the end of the day. Sucks- I hate when things die because I did something wrong.

Do your nerites come out of the water often? My nerites all come outside and I have to keep on eye on them at least 2-3x a day. One of them unfortunately became dog food but ya. Even with lids they find the smallest crack where the filter is and try to escape through there...
