I got handed a free 80 gallon acrylic aquarium

So I was at a store and I complimented this guys aquarium (just bc it was big) but the livestock was 1 hugeeeee pleco & 2 other medium ones. 2 angel fish. He was like you want t for free? I was like cool.... a free tank. Little did I know that the filter was underneath the broken stand it was on. I didnít know what I had gotten myself into. It didnít fit in my car so I left it outside the guys shop and hopefully Iíll pick it up today. I donít want or need the fish. So if anyone wants them PM me. Now, The question is, what can I do with the tank? I broke off the pvp piping bc the filter was trash. The stand was slipped sided. I donít want to have a canister filter, I would like a HOB filter. It has an acrylic lid on it, so how can I put a HOB filter? Is there anyways thatís even possible? If I canít find a way to make it work Iíll post pictures up today and I guess sell it for a super cheap price. Thanks for reading.

This acrylic tank is built without the eurobraced lid? I don't believe I've ever seen that before.

Personally, i will never go back to hob after taking the plunge into cannisters a couple years ago.

I would want to see a picture of it before making a recommendation

Iíll try to take a picture. Iím at work and will pick it up later today. I think I miss worded what I was trying to say. It has a lid on it. But I donít have the $ to buy a canister filter. If I canít find a way to filter the tank w out one I think Iíll sell it to someone who knows more about acrylic tanks.

Hey John, I decided to donate all the fish to Chris at Lotus Aquarium. I had no space for them and they were in a bucket. Thanks though!

    Good tank!

Those types of lids are difficult to place hobs on without cutting, which I do NOT recommend.

I would drill the tank and go canister. Super easy to do and probably the cleanest route. If you go sponge filter, I would do two corner hamburg matten filters. Depending on which HMF you go with, they could just look like two corner overflows and you can even hide your heater in them too.

I agree with Nick. Cutting into the lid will compromise structural integrity.

What about a diy sump? You can always find used smaller tanks free or ridiculously cheap online. But I guess that would depend on type of stand.

You could find a good used canister Craigslist.

Great find but free not exactly free when you consider the time you gonna spend on bringing back to life. Would look really nice after a good polish.

    Good luck

Nice find. I suggest getting Novus and some wet sandpaper. Did wonders on my acrylic tank I got recently. Makes it look almost brand new.

So after a long talk w my s/o Iíve decided that we canít afford the restoration and have no space for the tank. Let me know if anyone wants to buy it... very cheap... Iíll sell it for $50... or whatever offer I get but it needs to get picked up ASAP. Let me know. If not... then I donít know what Iíll do with it. No leaks. Thanks

    Eesh.

    What a winning setup.

I would totally do the repair job just for the fun of it, but maaaaaaawan. I need a other tank in my garage like I need another wife and kids right now.
