I've got the sand and crushed coral gravel for the substrate, just gotta get the motivation to finish it up and get everything running.

Looks like the water is trickling well outta that top container into the bio. Have you pulled the power to see where the water levels ends on failure? I saw you had a power strip on the floor, I'm sure you were already planning to, but mount it on the side up high.

Yeah, the power strip is up front for right during all the set up and everything. Got some salt water mixing in a bucket to turn it brackish. With power turned off theres still a good 4-5 inches of room from the top of sump for excess water.
I'm tempted to just take both of the HOB filters from the 29g (aquaclear50 and aqueon10) and put them on the 60g, take a couple of the lava rocks from the 29g and put em in there too, and do the fish transfer today. I figure with all of the bio filter in the two HOB's plus all the bacteria on the lava should take care of any new tank syndrome and remove the HOB's in a few weeks to a month. Whatcha think? Too risky? Lol?

Unfortunately it will not work as well as that.

The nitrogen cycle will require different bacterium species between fresh and salt. If you do the introduction of salt slowly it might help expedite that, but at that point you might as well just let it cycle altogether.

Ah Hah! *cue Adam West Batman Voice*
But the filters on the 29g are already mature from filtering Brackish Water (the tank the puffers are in in the living room, the 60g is an upgrade for them) so the bacteria is already from a brackish environment.
I've been reading up and it looks like the bacteria reproduces (doubles) every 24 hours, so by taking the filters rated up to 60 gallons from an established 29g tank and putting them on the 60g, and keeping the same livestock from the 29g and putting it in the 60g (essentially cutting the bioload for the current filters in half by doubling the water volume) I should be able instantly cycle this tank for the current livestock. After a couple of weeks the wet/dry filter should be colonized, sounds about right doesn't it? Gotta use all that punctuation to sound smart like lol.

I would imagine that your filtration pieces will get nitrogen bacteria transferred over in just a matter of hours. They'll work at full capacity within a week. Give it a 25% wc every two days, and after a week you should be golden.

Sweet, thats what everything I have been reading and researching has been saying but I am always extra cautious when something so cruicial is involved.
The brackish tank the puffers and the filters are coming from is going back to a freshwater tank, I have an established filter for that so the brackish filter won't be missed on that tank. Though they will have to be cycled again eventually for freshwater.
Thanks for the confirmation Nick, I appreciate it.

Here's some more DIY for the build, seems like everything but the tank, stand, and heater are turning out to be DIY lol.
I went down to Petco and picked up a ZooMed Hanging Dual Lamp Fixture for reptiles, each fixture is rated up to 100 watts, not bad for $40. I put in (2) 6500k Daylight CFL Bulbs. I used 2 screw in hooks and some diamond braid clothesline to hang it. I put a Current Satellite Freshwater LED on the front half of the tank to help brighten it up. The hanging light is necessary for the Mangroves above the water line.

I also took some styrofoam pieces and put holes in them to put the Mangroves in to float while they get bigger.

With the lights and the Mangroves in the tank it's coming together really nicely. Can't wait for those Mangroves to grow!

Looking good. I may have to check out that feather rock if I get another tank. Love the mangroves. Those are such tough plants - a burn the heck out of you if you get the sap on your skin.

Been a while since I've done an update...just going to continue on this thread for this tank.
The filter has been working like a champ! Very happy with it.
The Mangroves are growing very slowly, but they ARE growing lol.
There's 2 Green Spotted Puffers and a Green Scat that have been in there for a couple months now, they are very happy and have great personalities. The Green Scat seems to think he's a puffer lol. I ended up getting a nice sized Figure 8 Puffer from CK, I was there when someone brought it in to Peter for trade. His teeth are a little overgrown and his belly is kinda dark, not sure what his diet was where he came from. He sure does love the clams on the half shell, all of em do. Getting some more snails for him to munch on to help with the teeth. Hopefully in the next month he will color up nice and healthy. I love these fish, such personalities.
As you can see in the pictures, lighter colored substrates don't stay that way for long.
Here's a picture similar to how I am planning the tank to look in the coming years, with a couple modifications. I've had problems with puffers jumping so I will have to come up with a lid thats hollow in the center for the trunk of the tree.
