    Ebony or Red Oak?

I wrapped an old 150 gallon long tank stand with pallet wood and almost done. I'm so indecisive and can't make up my mind so I'm asking for suggestions. The room I"m putting this baby hewey will look good with either stain finish. I asked friends and surprisingly came out 50-50.

Majority rules. Hope you guys can help break the tie...

I start staining tomorrow after work so 4PM is the deadline.

I would like to see the rest of the room first to know how it is supposed to match or contrast.

They're both pretty nice. Personally I would do ebony because if it's not the fish or sand, it needs to be black. Black is the new black.

I agree with Nick, whats the style of the room its going into? I'm always a fan of stain over paint, I prefer natural Earthy colors on wood so I would go with Red Oak. If it fits with the room though go with ebony.

Another thing about staining is how important prep is. Paint, you are just showcasing the shape of what you are covering with paint. Stain, you are accenting the existing wood.

By itself, the red is the most beautiful, but ebony and other dark stains need a very well sanded surface, as well as a properly conditioned one. I would get a good stain conditioner and cover after a good thorough sanding before using any dark stain. It will make a tremendous difference.

I like the red. But it would depend on the room. My personal preference is for lighter wood over darker.

Awesome! Ebony it is. I was leaning more towards that as well. Thanks all!! I will post pic of final product and room when it's all done. I will be asking for advice on the scape once it's in place.

Thanks for the insightful suggestion. Since I'm using pallet wood I wanted to make it look rough. Didn't want to spend too much time with fine woodworking. I used various pieces mostly pine, some oak, and some others. I feel it looks pretty nice. It's very rough and rustic but I also added some nice routered trim to soften it up a bit. I post pics of finished product and the room and you guys can chime in. Thanks!

Yeah, I've never done a pallet project. I'm intrigued by them. I have access to hundreds, maybe even thousands at a time, but I've never been inclined to play with them, other than occasionally taking them home and then changing my mind.

They are definitely, already a stressed surface which can make very rustic appearances, but they're never at length i can foresee paneling them in a way that I desire.

Im looking forward to seeing this.

The pics don' do it justice. I'm really happy with the results! For those that chose Ebony here is the final product. I'll be making a matching canapy in the near future but for now I can't wait to start scaping.

I put frosted glass window film on back of the tank. I'm planning on putting some shadow light in the back. I'll see how it goes.

Finished product looks good, I wouldn't be suprised if you get PM's from people begging you to make them a stand.

It looks great! I'd also love to see pictures of the doors open, and the inside. Nice job.
