Dwarf pikes (crenicichla) just because they are soooooo cool. Don't think the rest of the fish in the tank would agree though.

Bolivian Rams are awesome... larger than most dwarf cichlids but small enough for a 40g... full of character and can be kept with smaller fish... if you can find em, some strains have been bred to be quite colorful....instead of a larger centerpiece cichlid you could add 3 or 4 of em...

Already have four German rams (two blue, two gold). Was thinking of something that could be solo and a bit larger than the other fish to draw the eye. An angel would be cool if they wouldn’t get big enough to eat neons. Kind of liking the idea of a discus.

Festivum cichlids are another choice from that region... resemble angle fish, but a bit out of the ordinary... they largely stay at the upper sections of the tank, so your tank won’t look crowded... I keep mine with various tetras and apistos... peaceful....

CK is always the best to check with....I’ve seen small juveniles at the reef in Anaheim...but that was some time ago... Brandon at Natilus had two adults recently, they looked like a pair too...
