I wasn't trolling my lfs I told him what I thought they were. But they didn't look so good so I told him I'd take them all if he gave me a good deal on them. So I bought all 5. I got them from big save in Westminster. I told the store owner he needs to get more apistos so I can buy them lol.

Big-Sav kinda reminds me of a shop that used to be in Norwalk that was Donuts/Icecream/Discount/Petstore/Skateshop and Screen Printing all in one.

Ya I've known the owner for probably about 10+ years now so he always hooks me up!

Having looked again, i think it’s maybe a juvenile female Apistogramma Nijsseni...very similar to the panduro...

Pabduro or nijsseni, you are very fortunate to have such an awesome fish....

Apistogramma Baenschi or Inka has the same characteristics as A Panduro too.

What is the allure to apistos? I've never kept cichlids of any kind.

Are these guys as smart and creative as traditional cichlids? Do they have the same brackish water requirements that malawi cichlids have? Are they aggressive and should be kept by themselves?

They are gorgeous looking fish, I've just never gotten to see them up closer in order to learn their personality traits.

Small, often colorful, community oriented fish that are interactive and easy to maintain. I think they're often overlooked because they don't look very colorful when stressed our or young.

They are docile, don't dig and are relatively flashy while maintaining a very planted tank friendly size. Oh and each have their own complex personality, while still maintaining key sp traits.

And no, apistos donít have the same water requirements as Africans- they fall perfectly into Planted tank specs, as they are almost all from South American rivers and lakes. They love soft, dark water and lots of cover.

Nick, beats me... I just dig em... what everyone said is right on... most do prefer darken tannin rich water - while the most popular (triple and double reds) come from clear water areas of the amazon, totally suitable for planted tanks (soft water) and medium light....

I posted this on another thread, but it gives an example of the diversity found with apistos...
    http://apisto.sites.no/slekt.aspx?gruppeID=1

They have all the personality of very intelligent oscars and jack Dempsey- wrapped in an inch long body.... mostly fine in community tanks, when spawning they can be aggressive (like all cichlids), but that’s when you’ll see the striking colorations of both males and females... very inquisitive fish and never dull to watch if placed in an environment mimicking their natural habitats....

If you’re on the fence and find yourself in the Cerritos area, swing by... I just set up a tank with Peruvian apistos (panduros)... thoroughly enjoying it... even though next to nothing re plants... you’re welcome to check em out...
