Just rescued 100s of cherry shrimps

About 8 months ago, I helped setup my brother's nano tank (2.5 gal). It has a small hob & nano heater with a full on riccia moss carpet. It looked super simple and nice. After it was cycled, I gave him about a dozen adult size cherry shrimps.

Yesterday, I came to check out the tank. He said he never changed the water, just added more tap water without any conditioners. Light is on 24/7. Yes 24/7.The riccia moss is no longer tied to the rocks and is floating on top and took over 20% of the tank but looked healthy and lush. The water is dirty, the hob is dirty and riccia is growing on it & glass is super dirty.

His pet keeping habit is questionable but there 1000s of shrimps in this tiny tank. I took about 100 shrimp and there are 1000s left.

Terrible condition with booming shrimp population, how is this possible???

they must of just adapted to the conditions of the tank. By leaving the light on 24/7 it created a ton of biofilm and algae for the shrimps to munch on. Funny how that happens, and then there is people like I who worry about their tanks and are always doing something with their tanks.

Shrimp after miraculous creatures. They have short lives in order to allow prevalence of generational mutations that favor certain conditions. They are literally underwater Cockroaches.

    It is no surprise.

The 24/7 light is not a good idea though.

Sounds like what I do with my CRS/CBS, except I only have the lights on for ~5 hours a day. All i do is top off and they are doing just fine xD My glass got really dirty and I added a nerite snail a few weeks back and it looks brand new! Maybe he can add a snail to clear up his glass.

Great idea! I am gonna give him some pond snails. You don't treat your tap water?

I would need to find the tank, but I believe James (a SCAPE member) had a set it and forget it CRS tank that was working marvelously and he did absolutely zero maintenance on it.

    UPDATE
    Found it: http://scapeclub.org/forum/showthrea...699#post191699

Well, my tap has a filter connected to it for drinking water. So i just use that and just pour straight into the tank. I started out with 5 now have over 100, HOWEVER when I started to get taiwan bees ( my crs/cbs were sold to me as mischlings) they usually all died off or just really good at hiding cause my BKK is nowhere to be seen . Now it is mainly all CBS dominated with a few CRS here and there.

Are those stones on the bottom or are there just a bunch of leaves?

Its looks like he put 3 to 5 pieces of slate stone on the bottom.

What caught into my attention, he is using chopstick as a stand for his chihiros light, +1 for creativity.

What is the water temperature? And what temperature he set on his heater?

Are you sure that 2.5 gallon looks like at least 5 gallon or more.

lol. You were not kidding about the conditions. The sticks holding up the chihiros made me crack up, it def fits the bill with the rest of the tank.

sad that he has better success than I do in breeding shrimp.

It's a Aquatop 15-Watt Nano Aquarium Heater pre-set to 77. I got this for him so I remember lol.

These are the new breed of shrimp, they're called Java Shrimp - they can live in anything condition. Also, they have no color, just clear not even a hint of red.

It's stone stale...I give it to him when it had lush riccia carpet on it.Told him to trim it or it will float.

Cherry shrimp can live through an atomic blast.
