Anyone out there with some ponds/outdoor tanks?

I currently have a few ponds/outdoor tanks that have been set up for a couple years, 3 are planted, 2 have only floaters. The planted outdoor tanks are all doing pretty well with filtered sunlight, no co2 and minimal filtration/no filtration. One of them a 40G has a full dhg belem carpet and a slew of stems. It's not the nicest looking tank essentially set up collectoris style, but it's doing a great job of sustaining itself. I'm also growing some Erio Vietnam floating in a water pitcher with R/O DI... They are supposed to go into a tank that I have not set up yet... (woo! procrastination/lack of space) Will get some pics up tomorrow.

I was curious though, is anyone else out there running any outdoor tanks or a planted pond? What are the specifications of your tank? How long have you had it up and running?

I have an outdoor tank/pond. I live in an apartment so digging a pond isn't an option. I took a 40g breeder and built a box around it. It sits on my patio. I first has gravel but it was hard to clean. Got rid of that for river rock, still hard to clean. I finally decided to just paint the bottom black and go with no rocks. It has water lettuce but nothing else. I enjoy it for what it is. Stocked with 3 koi and a hi find shark.

    That is gorgeous. Bruce!

I have thought about doing an outside tank, but it gets too hot out here in Riverside... a pond some day for sure.

Here are some pics of my outdoor tanks.

The 40G Has a small hob filter and maintains itself pretty well. Where as I have just started establishing aquatic plants in the larger 100+ G shallow tank which also has a tank inside of it that is currently used as a green water farm to feed my daphnia. There is no filtration in the 100+G or the 29G inside of it. Aside from riparium plants.

Both tanks get topped off with untreated tap water from the garden hose every few days. I have done 2 water changes on the larger tank in the past 3 years 1 of them was 2 months ago when I added the substrate and plants. I can only imagine what the hardness is at, but both tanks seem to be doing okay.

Carlo, do you ever worry about mosquitos? Can you keep any fauna in them? Or do they get too warm?

I have least kili and a large goldfish in the 100+G in the 40G the filter prevents misquitos because of the moving water. Both tanks are shaded, so they only recieve filtered light. I have another tank in full sun that is stagnant, I use an herbal/oil based pesticide and it prevents mosquitos, it also houses a large colony of scuds.

    carlo,
Do you have heater in planted tank in winter month? And do you have light for it or just natural sunlight?

No heater, just always used appropriate fish. The only light is sunlight.

I'm pretty unfamiliar with most kilifish. I've only ever had Least Kili (H. formosa) Golden wonder kili.

I had not planned to keep the kilifish in the outdoor pond, but had accidentally siphoned off babies and unknowingly dumped them into an outdoor tank. They survived 2 winters before I even noticed them. After that I just moved the colony over to the pond tank. Normally I would have said don't put em outside without a heater, but they happened to survive the cold snap we had 2 winters ago when it dropped to 38 degrees, so I just left em out there and they do just fine. All of em are fat and breeding more now that I have added additional plants to the tank.

Added a light just so I can view at night because I don't get to see my gobies much during the day. Everything is doing good in the tank and everything is filling out.

I have two tubs and a pond. I keep bald cypress trees in mine, so any fish waste gets taken up really fast...

It’s a bummer this thread is always slow. I have a large jar, small fiberglass waterfall and just set up a cube tank with some hyacinth and other plants with a couple dollars of feeder guppies and a pair of sword tails.

I still have the faux pond I posted before. I just bought a new house so I'm looking forward to starting on a real pond soon. I'll post pics when I do.

Here’s my wine barrel pond. I started this fall of 2019. Been adding plants gradually. All fish are feeder fish that I got when they were about less than an inch long.

Hey there, just joined the site this week. Most of my tanks are outside under shade very little light at night no CO2, I have13 tanks outside oldest one about a year and newest one a month. Battling new tank algae blooms on some. But I like tanks outside, get all the bugs and outdoor nature into the tanks.D5771D89-4297-42BF-9B1E-E327AD8E02CB.jpg

That is nice looking setup. Did you line the wine barrel with anything?
