    IT'S RUNNING!

    FTS 1/26/17:
    20170126_175704b.jpg

I've had tanks for most of the past 20 years or so, but never anything bigger than a 30 gallon tank planted. Mostly little bookshelf 6 gallon tanks with DIY CO2 and generic (read cheap) plants.

I was pointed here by the guy that came and got the rocks and fish out of my 70 gallon reef tank last night (tossing the tank).

I have a brand new custom acrylic 60 gallon tank that's getting plants and south american fish, predominantly angels.

I'm excited to get a more serious planted tank going.

Here's the new tank on my dining table:

And the stand I built using quarter sawn african mahogany:

Once I get everything cleaned up from the reef, it'll be sumped and herbied, since this was originally intended to be a replacement for the reef tank with a broken brace. I will continue to use the LED lights I had for the reef, but dialed down to get around 30-50 PAR at the sandbed. The plants will stroke the nerd in me, and the angels will make the wife happy. So win/win! She liked the reef for how colorful it was, but she never got into the fish and their personalities (or lack thereof). She spent more time watching my little Fluval Edge with neons and a betta. haha

I have all the equipment except for CO2, now I just need to start putting it together. I hope to learn here what I've been missing.

Thanks! I hope it's at least as amazing when it's running and stable.

The sump is an Aqueon Model 2. I forgot I need to either build or order a w/d box for it. Grating for the bottom and bioballs is easy, but the drip plate... It's only $60 or so for a kit made for this sump, so I haven't decided. I mean, this isn't the 80's any more. I don't have to DIY absolutely EVERYTHING. hehehe

Pic of the sump in the stand when I set it up for the reef:

My betta in the Edge. I need to hurry up with this new tank before those albino corys outgrow the little Edge...

That is a gorgeous stand. I've been wanting to do something similar with Tigers eye ebony, but haven't gotten around to it.

I think you are now my muse. BRAVO.

Oh, goodness, I hope not. My woodworking skills aren't where I should be. This was easy though. I just built a robust 2x4 frame, then skinned it in pretty wood. The side panels are 1/4" rips I made from some boards and ran through the planer. The rest is just planed and cut to fit. Nothing fancy.

Pic of it with the old tank on it. I still haven't gotten around to making the door.

    Some under construction pics:

They trade off who's on top. The Lumia kicked everybody around a couple years ago (I still have a 950 on the shelf, and had an Icon 928 before that, and an HTC WP8 before THAT), but the support both from the networks and from Microsoft has been so bad it's just not worth it. Too bad, because I love the Windows Phone platform. Oh well.

Not my thing. My 13yo daughter plays on her iPhone (well, when she doesn't lose the stupid thing at LAX). Shoot, I've got friends my age who play too. I never got into it in the GameBoy days, and it doesn't interest me now.

I think it's time to fire up either HL2DM or Pinball Arcade...

Yay! Tank is on the stand!

I filled it up partially to check level, tank integrity, and to do some PAR readings of the two lights I have.

First was the Orbit Marine Pro 36" light with both white and blue channels at max. PAR at the bottom of the tank was a measly 23. Can't use this...

Our next contender is the 30" MarsAqua Reef LED fixture, with the blue channel turned off. This light has some serious punch, giving me nearly 350 PAR at the bottom of the tank.

Unfortunately the light from the MarsAqua, even with the blue channel turned off, had a color temp of around 8500K. Far bluer than I had hoped for.

So the search will continue while I work on the plumbing.

The more I'm thinking about it, the more I'm leaning toward giving the MarsAqua a go. 8500K isn't terrible, and there's 5000K and 3500K LEDs in there as well. I'm going to try it to start with before spending any more on a new light.

Now that's settled, I'm trying to decide on my Apex Jr. I ran my reef on that Jr. with an additional PB-8, simply as a temp controller and consolidation for all my timers. I didn't use a pH probe or anything. I just figured out that to buy the pH probe and module would actually cost more than the Milwaukee pH controller.

The upside of keeping the Apex is when I start dosing, it'll be super easy to program. I'm kinda torn...

    Thanks!

Big tank is on hold. Found out the landlord is selling the house I'm renting. Sigh. Gonna be moving soon.

So, after two months of terror (not knowing if I was gonna be moving or not), then the holidays, and on and on, it finally settled. I kept feeding the tank ammonia during this time, so there was a great bio filter established.

    Here's a FTS from today:

    20170126_175704b.jpg

I only have the blue tetras at the moment. If I can find some red koi angels locally they'll get added. The plants have only been in there a day so I want to give them a few more days to root before I add corys.

It's nice to be running finally!

I thought about those, but the blue is REALLY hard to see in person. The GloFish blue doesn't actually glow under normal lights. Not even under actinics. It's just a really strong blue. The other GloFish colors though... EEK!
