    Building automated systems/arduino/meeting ideas

    Hey guys!

I have been tinkering with automated electrical systems lately, and have been ordering supplies to make my own, custom lighting systems, and have been highly considering an arduino build.

In this day and age, the cost of lighting systems out of a box is ussually 60% cheaper than building a custom one by one's self, because of the bulk quantities that commercial producers are capable at getting supplies themselves and having labor done for them over seas.

However, as a consumer, we are often forced into an inserviceable, or unhackable design in the products we can purchase at this less expensive level.

Simply put, if I were to setup a makers space that everyone would be capable of participating in from supplies to tools, who would be interested in such a meeting?

This would need to be a premium tiered meeting. Supplies, at a minimum would scale to the agreed upon project that everyone would have in mind, but would potentially save everyone loads over individual retail purchase, as well as the headache in problem solving by working together as a group.

I spoker with cGar at the last meeting about hosting a meeting at a maker space to build ADA stands, but at the end of the day, this would only allow us, at most, to complete one stand together.

Now,if we chose to do it this way, we could raffle the stand to one participant at the end of the meeting, and everyone would come out having learned how to build their own stand.

In the case of the LED build, we could at the very least, build custom nano/pico lights somewhere within the $50 range.

I live for making things, and learning how to do so truly unlocks doors, and i could probably secure us a number of locations and tools for various projects.

I would love to bring this to our group.

Sounds like a really great idea! I also like to build my own things. If these locations were ever close to Irvine, I'd definitely join (:

Unfortunately, i haven't much clout outside of the inland empire, and as the majority of tools used would be my own, i would prefer to make arrangements closer to home.

If there is significant interest in this idea for a meeting, I'll put together an agenda for requirements in order for it to move forward.

If it would be beneficial for the participants as a majority to have it "closer to home," i wouldn't be against the idea, but until more people show interest, I'm going to make arrangements to keep it in redlands or riverside.

I've started tinkering with Arduino, there's a handful of aquarium projects out there using the this platform.
Im curious what functionality are you trying to accomplish with arduino?

    Yes.

It turned out to be more expensive than already in production alternatives

I might go back to this, just for the sake of doing it, but for what I was interested in waa a bigger project than the scale of interest that we had.

Wave makers, current drivers, programmable lightinf schedules, etc, can be controlled by reef link, apex and similar.

I just do not have the time to do it all myself right now, as much as I would love to, but such a "knock off" using open sourced system development was my desire.

I bought the kids an arduino kit. We have only done 2 experiments. I hope in the next coming months to make a night where me and the kids work on new projexts and learn together weekly.
