Just a small quick update on these babies. They are now 3 1/2 months old. Some males are starting to show colors and acting like punk. Hahaha. They are all on a variety diet of dry, frozen and live food. I think I will get a good ratio of M/F in this batch.

    9th month:

Just a quick update on this project. These kids are now in the juvie / young adult stage. They start fighting, flirting and blah blah all the time. The spawn has been divided into 2 tanks for more space to grow. However, it seems I may have to split them up again in one more tank. There are more females then males as of now. Hopefully more males will mature up.

Awesome work! Any way we can get a full tank shot of the parent's tank? I'm just curious of what the ideal setup looks like.

Any pic of your breeder setup ? I have been trying to breed them in a 20 gallon long but no success.

Ben, I will try to post the pic of the parent setup. I'm using a 20 gallon long as well. Bare bottom tank. It's actually very simple.

One thing I find during this project is that these fish are easy to adapt to their water and living conditions. To breed them, however, you will need a lot of observations and patient to learn about the behavior of each pair.

Mine used to swallow the egg all the time and then i just gave up. Thinking of getting back to raising them again. Hardest part right now is finding someone who would sell them.

Whenever you get these fish ask the seller for their age. Young females are good for their precious good eggs while the older males are good for their brooding experience. It will take some time to see their interactions with each other and make any adjustments to make them feel safe and comfortable.

If you can get some new blood in, I will be interested in trading some males for some of my females since there are quite a few females in this spawn.

A young male from this batch bred with one female while in the community tank recently. However, he only had the eggs for 2 days. Looks like I have to start separating out now.
