Awesome! I watched the newest vid first then went back through the thread and saw the vid on P.1!!! They are growing really well!!! So much bigger and more beautiful!

I wish I had the follow through and consistency to do Discus... Really nice tank!

Thank you. The tank is rather bare for a planted tank forum, but it has to be this way until they are fully grown

    Wowie!!!
Beautiful fish. Its when I see fish that colorful and well taken care of that I start to wonder what they would taste like... Don't invite me over....

Great job! I can't wait for the day when I get the opportunity to keep Discus! (As pets, I promise)

Beautiful fish dude, how big can you foresee them getting? And around how old do they slow down with the power growing?

Lol, I will definitely NOT refer you to my friend who has a fish room, it would look like a buffet to you, lol.

    Thx (?)

Good question, and somewhat of a complicated answer. IF you raise the discus as I am raising them, with heavy feedings daily and daily water changes, AND they have good genes's, you can easily get your discus to 8" which is a huge discus. On average though, most people get their discus to the 7-7.5" under the circumstances that I am raising them.

With that said, in my batch, there are a mix of 3 different strains. I know it seems odd that the parents look exactly the same, but that line isn't stable, which means that when they had offspring, only a small portion of them are like them.

    I have the following:
Snake Skins - or 14 bar that will more than likely end up like the parents
    9 bar turquoise
9 bar leopards. I would like to call a few of mine "ring" leopards which makes them more valuable, but that kind of thing isn't known when they are young, only at the age that mine are do you find out which have the "rings" on their body.

So, from those 3 types, the 14 bars, the ones that look most like the parents are known to be the slowest growers with less than desirable shape. I'm fortunate that with my feeding routine and water changes I have a few that are exceptions to this rule, but the rest are more in line with the normal growth of a 14 bar, which is slower than 9 bars. This is to be expected, but I still wanted ALL of them to be at least 7.5".

So, to answer your question more directly, most of these discus (if everything remains the same) will end up in the 7-7.5" range. The ones that are currently 4", they will end up at 6-6.5". More than likely these will be the females. The smaller ones aren't always the females, but it is typically a good indicator.

In about 4-5 months, they will start getting in to breeding age, and once they get to that stage, they slow down in growth siginficantly, more than likely stopping all together. That is why power feeding is so important in the early months. Putting on a half inch to an inch in the first few months is possible but towards the 1yr mark, you will be lucky to get .5" out of them in a month, they slow down siginificantly.

Approximately 8 month old group. This may be the last photo session showing all 13 discus. The last thinning of the herd will happen in the next week or two and I will be down to the final 8. It is going to be a difficult decision. The largest one in the group now is the Cuipeua Cross for sure at a little over 5.5". You can base the size of the others off of this one. I chose to do a shoot with no flash what-so-ever so I had to push the ISO pretty high up. Sorry about that but didn't feel like taking all the gear out.

Probably the tallest of the group, but smallest in length.

Group shots. Not all discus were pictured above. A lot of the nice and round 14 bars weren't cooperating in the individual shots:

I actually gave a group of them away here a few months back

I am down to my last 15 and a member here on the board had them reserved for a really long time for my last "thinning of the herd". Said member will be picking them up this Saturday. If you are interested in discus like this I can get you in contact with my buddy Al who lives in Hawthorne and he is the one I got these from originally. He still has the parents and breeds them still.

...and then there were 8! Sold the last 5 today. Didn't want to let any of them go, but knew I had to. They have gone on to a better tank, hopefully he will post pics soon of his setup.

This is a video I took yesterday of all of them before they were separated:

as you may have seen it was Rory that was the person who had these reserved for a while from me . Wanted him to give the news and not myself to not spoil the fun. My buddy Al has a lot more discus than I do though, and if you need some I can put you in touch with him.
