Ive become a bit pedantic about acclimation and testing parameters of incoming livestock. I drip acclaimed over night, or over days, as part of my QT process; depending on species.
I use a tank or a bucket and have a heater and sponge filter to setup a good intro process before I dump livestock into any of my tanks. Ive not lost any fish or invert since implementing this process. In the case of adjusting incoming livestock to my conditions, including pH changes of more than 1.0, I'll do a multi-day drip cycle to adjust slowly and reduce shock. I use both tank water and RO and test religiously each day. Crazy, perhaps, but it works for me.

You could skip the cycle and use a sponge filter, which provides great aeration, or have a spare HOB on the tank and keep it running full time. If not cycling just be prepared for frequent water changes.
You could jumpstart the cycle by using bio matter, gravel, hardscape items, etc from a mature tank.
If you're gonna use the tank as a hospital tank too, with meds, I'd not use a HOB or canister so you wont have the issue of left over meds in the filter. Go for bare bottom or basic gravel you can wash between uses.
I prefer bare bottom bucket w moss and potted plants that I can move around from tank to tank. I'm a big fan of the OSH paint department buckets in 2G and 3-1/2G sizes.
I have a thread here about a grow bucket. For my GBRs I just added a heater to that basic setup and its portable.

alright the 5g is filled up with 4g of water, the air pump is pumpin and the sponge filter is bubblin'. i just need a lil heater and i'll be dialed.
